Detailed description
Unlike most jellyfish that drift and pulse freely through the water column, Cassiopea chooses a calm bottom, resting upside down on sandy substrates with its bell pressed gently against the floor and its lacy arms extended toward the light. This unique posture is not random – it is part of a highly specialized adaptation. Symbiotic algae, known as zooxanthellae, live inside its tissues, converting sunlight into energy via photosynthesis, much like corals do. In return, the jellyfish provides a stable, well-lit habitat and a steady rhythm of gentle pulsations that keep nutrients flowing.
Cassiopea’s appearance resembles a living coral – its finely detailed, frilly arms and broad, flattened shape create a mesmerizing presence that seems to hover in quiet concentration. Its movement is subtle, intricate, and surprisingly structured. It doesn’t dominate the aquarium with size or speed, but draws the eye through its complexity and calm.
This species originates from the tropical lagoons of the Caribbean, Red Sea, and Indo-Pacific, where it lives in warm, shallow waters with minimal current – environments that mirror its preferred conditions in captivity. It thrives in low-flow aquariums with soft lighting, where its slow undulations and upside-down posture feel like a natural part of a meditative aquatic garden.
Beyond its biological uniqueness, Cassiopea brings a contemplative aesthetic to any setup. It’s ideal for advanced keepers or designers looking to add both scientific wonder and poetic stillness to their display. More than a jellyfish, it’s a living artwork – slow, deliberate, and symbiotic by nature.

Cassiopea
size guide
Thanks to its spread-out shape and life on the bottom, Cassiopea appears compact yet spatially striking – like a living structure in the calm zone of the aquarium.
We always send young specimens, whose growth is gradual. As they mature, their texture and shape gain in depth and visual appeal.
Cassiopea
Lifespan guide
Cassiopea can live approximately 18 months in aquarium conditions, with its development occurring slowly and steadily. Stable conditions and a calm environment are the key to maintaining its natural vitality – from a compact young form to a fully grown, richly textured adult jellyfish.
Caring for
Cassiopea
This species requires a calm environment and a shallow water layer with sufficient lighting – this is where it spends most of its time upside down, with its bell facing down. It thrives best at a temperature of 19–24 °C and salinity between 30–32 ppt.
It is completely non-stinging and should always be kept individually, without other species. For feeding, we recommend Marine Jellyfish Food or baby brine shrimps, 3–4 times per week. On a care difficulty scale, it ranks at 3 out of 5 – it requires a bit more attention but rewards with a hypnotic, calm movement.

At Ocean’s Clouds, we believe that beauty should flow hand in hand with responsibility. That’s why every jellyfish we offer is bred in a carefully controlled environment — never taken from the wild. Raised under optimal conditions, they grow without stress, mirroring the calm they later bring into your home.
Our aquariums are designed to echo the natural rhythm of the sea. With no sharp edges and a continuous circular flow, they create the ideal habitat for jellyfish to drift, pulse, and glow — just as they would in open waters. It’s a living sculpture that adds silence, softness, and balance to any space.
This is not just about keeping jellyfish. It’s about creating a daily ritual of calm, a connection to the ocean, and a space where science, design, and nature meet. What you see is effortless beauty. What lies beneath is precision, ethics, and years of marine expertise.
