Detailed description
Spotted Lagoon (Mastigias papua) is a jellyfish with a soft blue tint and distinctive speckles, giving it a slightly mysterious yet peaceful appearance. Its rounded body and bell are dotted with irregular pale markings that resemble scattered light on a lagoon’s surface. This visual effect creates the impression of a natural ornament, as if born from the heart of tropical waters.
It originates from the tropical lagoons and calm bays of Indonesia and the broader Indo-Pacific region, where it thrives in shallow, sunlit waters rich in nutrients. In the wild, it is often found near coral reefs and mangrove areas, forming calm groups that slowly drift as part of a wider ecosystem.
While swimming, it often rotates gently, causing its tentacles to sway in a smooth, hypnotic rhythm. This movement is not only visually captivating but also therapeutic – watching the Spotted Lagoon jellyfish brings a deep sense of calm and inner balance. Its motion feels like a slow dance of water and light.
Unlike some other species, it doesn’t rely on intense color or dramatic silhouette. Its strength lies in softness, which is precisely why it is an ideal choice in the Ocean’s Clouds collection for those seeking a gentle yet visually compelling jellyfish – a living presence that brings a sense of peace and harmony into any aquarium without being intrusive.

Spotted Lagoon
size guide
The bell typically reaches a size of 2–2.8 in (5 to 7 cm), while tentacles are usually around 1.6–2 in (4 to 5 cm) long. Thanks to its compact dimensions, this species is suitable even for smaller aquariums, where it can create a calm and visually appealing atmosphere.
Specimens are shipped in their early developmental stage and gradually gain their characteristic form and delicate details as they grow.
Spotted Lagoon
Lifespan guide
With proper care, it can live up to 24 months, making it one of the longest-living species in the Ocean’s Clouds collection. Its growth and development are gradual, allowing you to observe subtle changes in its appearance and movement throughout its entire life cycle.
Caring for
Spotted Lagoon
This species thrives best at a temperature between 20–25 °C (68–77 °F) and with a stable salinity of 30–32 ppt. For feeding, we recommend Marine Food or baby brine shrimps, ideally 3–4 times per week.
The jellyfish is completely non-stinging, and just like other Ocean’s Clouds species, it should always be kept on its own. We rate the difficulty of care as 4 out of 5, which requires regular maintenance and attention to tank conditions.

At Ocean’s Clouds, we believe that beauty should flow hand in hand with responsibility. That’s why every jellyfish we offer is bred in a carefully controlled environment — never taken from the wild. Raised under optimal conditions, they grow without stress, mirroring the calm they later bring into your home.
Our aquariums are designed to echo the natural rhythm of the sea. With no sharp edges and a continuous circular flow, they create the ideal habitat for jellyfish to drift, pulse, and glow — just as they would in open waters. It’s a living sculpture that adds silence, softness, and balance to any space.
This is not just about keeping jellyfish. It’s about creating a daily ritual of calm, a connection to the ocean, and a space where science, design, and nature meet. What you see is effortless beauty. What lies beneath is precision, ethics, and years of marine expertise.
